Getting a handle on the use of solipsism is a bit difficult because it's usage differs from the philosophical concept, and it seems to be a catchall judgment for whatever a woman is doing wrong. I'm not sure I understand its purpose in the discussions, since we can always come up with some extreme form of behavior and say, "See, here's female solipsism at work." Women's "selves" are central to their lives. Yes. The "selves" of men are not central to their lives. Men and women are different. And?

That workplace sounds bizarre. FWIW, I think giving tips on being more efficient would have been more helpful than posting a list of what each person had accomplished. The intent may have been to increase productivity, but strategy is more important in that respect than just ranking people. Really, all the list told them was where they fell relative to others, not what they were doing wrong to not be as productive as they could be. I worked many temp jobs and often was very fast--so much so that it was commented on. Some people are faster than others. Some people are better at figuring out how to do things most quickly. Others not so much.

The story in some ways made me think that it's good that women and men are different because not everything is always about getting to the bottom line most efficiently. Not even in business as it turns out. That kind of mentality is what leads companies to lay people off right before they are going to hit retirement because they think, "Who cares about feelings, this is just about the results." That's an extreme, but it definitely happens.Denisehttp://lovethepossibility.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4514791571109198162.post-37874488223886455442013-11-02T17:53:10.009-04:002013-11-02T17:53:10.009-04:00Disappointed. There is no going back.

You might find it sad, but hurt feelings are not going to change the fact that I was provoked when I tried to do my own thing within the bounds of the job. Perhaps my behavior was "typically male", in the response of their "typically female" group dynamic - in which case we have a delightful display of gender differences in the workplace.

But what would you have me do? Be the "noble" one, try to be the bigger man and indulge them in their projections and rationalizations and solipsisms? Why should I be the one to do so, and not they? Feminism established the ideal of the "level playing field", but your attempt to shame me with your sadness and disappointment just furthers the idea that I should live up to female standards of behavior when the females in question held themselves to no such ideal. I can't help but notice that many women take recourse in the why can't you just grow up argument, without being willing to hold themselves or their female peers to account in the same way.

So the price of their provocation was having their own solipsism used against them. And now it is enshrined in the internet forever as an example to others. You can shake your head and disapprove, but without a more compelling reason than that, I don't see why I should have done anything different, when I was clearly in a disadventageous situation. If you can come up with something better than "be nice", I'd like to hear it. "Don't tease them because they are girls" doesn't work. Thank feminism for that, too.Ian Ironwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09776355241706284910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4514791571109198162.post-27553534604663326422013-10-28T18:49:20.074-04:002013-10-28T18:49:20.074-04:00I found this article sad. You didn't have to rile everyone up with your notebook. And the fact that you take pride in it is awful. It puts me in mind of a woman who took pride in punching a guy in the face right after he told a rape joke to his (male) friend. These are awful things to be proud of. You drove a pack of women insane with curiosity because you found it funny. She punched a guy so hard she broke three fingers. Its not something to be proud of. Its not something to yell "Yeah, you go girl/dude!" Think about what this is doing to society.
If women are guilty of over-thinking how their actions impact the world around them, then men are guilty of under-thinking.
Whenever I hear internet debates like this, with each party cheering and booing in turn, it makes me really sad. This observation tends to fit that recent manosphere pattern of correctly recognizing how modern people suck, but then mistaking it as a woman-only thing. Yes, a real man supposed to be non-solipsistic, but very few men today are of that type anymore.

The "don't take it personally, just business" it is not merely a man's credo but an alpha mans credo. Very, very few men are like that. For example the average funny t-shirt and sandals IT guy I know takes every question as a critique, so starts the answer by first qualfiying how he is doing everything right and nothing can be his fault ever, and then goes on to explain.

I mean there is a certain amount of wishful thinking it taking the great alpha man qualities, and then kind of saying men are like this women not. I think this author makes this mistake. Non-solipsist is alpha. I was attempting to unify an effective team response in the face of a budgetary deadline. One of those stupid "male" things we do when we actually want to accomplish something more than we want to avoid hurting feelings. The fact was, I didn't enjoy the attention -- I wanted to hide in my car in the face of that sea of estrogen. But I wasn't allowed to.

And I don't see that as a "fail" because I did more work than any other single employee, and more than several of them put together. The only thing "toxic" about working with me was when people wanted me to do something entirely outside of reasonable working conditions. If someone failed, it was the boss. Which completely misses the point. We *know* men can't even tell when we're wearing makeup; we don't wear it for them. We do it to impress other women, and secondarily, to improve our own self image. Even in female-only spaces (a sorority house, say) women still put a lot of thought and effort into their looks. And more anecdotally, I've noticed some (but only some) women drop these routines when they're going somewhere they expect to encounter only men.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4514791571109198162.post-14632630564355329922012-11-15T06:59:03.787-05:002012-11-15T06:59:03.787-05:00I think it's more that enviromental charities ...I think it's more that enviromental charities and greenwashed companies deliberately appeal to this side of women.
